The Halloween tradition in England

Did you know that Halloween was formerly called Mischief Night in England? From the name itself, you will get a clear picture on what is happening then on Halloween night. It is also known as a Nutcracker night or Tan day in Lancashire. Aside from the usual trick or treating, apple bobbing, and costume parties, there are lots of things to learn about the Halloween traditions in England.

In England, people light candles outside their homes in order to drive away evil spirit. In some areas, they also burn hay in order to scare witches. There are those who just light turnip lanterns instead. They also provide food to avoid the wrath of angry ghosts and spirits. So when you are in England, be ready to learn how to prepare tasty soul cakes or otherwise known as “Saumas” and “Punkies”. On Halloween night, single women use hazel nut to determine their would-be suitors. People also believed that by holding a candle in front of the mirror on Halloween night, your future partner in life will appear. Another interesting fact is that white cats and not the black ones are considered bad luck in England.

Although not as commercialize as compared in the United States, the men and women in England also love to wear costumes on Halloween. According to old wives’ tale, the Halloween costume is a disguise to confuse the dead.

Happy “Nos Calan Gaeaf”! That is how they say it in Wales. So whether you will call it All Hallows Eve, Samhain, All Hallowtide, or The Feast of the Dead, it is still the same Halloween!
